Betta splendens (Regan, 1910)
Aka Siamese Fighting Fish. Known for its bright colorations, available in many different colors and fin shapes. Known best for the tendency of males to fight to the death following several moments where the males raise their gill govers and spread their gills in a threatening manner. Males typically have long fancy fins while the females have very little color or fin growth. Body is very long with an upward pointing mouth. Often found in stores sold in small cups. Carnivore. Prefers 7.0 pH. 65-75 degree Fahrenheit temperature recommendation. Bubblenest builder. To begin nest building water needs to be no more then 6 inches deep with no surface movement. Once the nest is built a courtship dance occurs and the male typically squeezes the female. Eggs are collected or laid in the next and fry hatch within 24 hours.
